ORLANDO, Fla. - Kelsi Dunne was selected first overall and Whitney Larsen was the 13th pick as both Alabama players were drafted by the NPF Diamonds, Friday night in the National Pro Fastpitch Senior draft, presented by Miken from the Amway Center in Orlando.
The selection of Dunne first overall marked the second straight season that an Alabama player was taken off the board first. Charlotte Morgan was the first pick in the 2010 draft, selected by the eventual league champion USSSA Pride.
Dunne was selected literally in the middle of her two-hit gem against No. 1 Georgia Friday night. The senior struck out 11 to lead Alabama to a 2-1 win. On the season the right-hander is 12-1 with a 0.52 ERA. She has struck out 136 in 81.1 innings and is holding opposing batters to a microscopic .101 batting average.
Larsen will join Dunne on the Diamonds as the versatile infielder went in the fourth round, 13th overall. Larsen ranks third all-time at Alabama with 40 career home runs. On the season the senior is batting .355 with six home runs and 29 RBI.
Alabama will continue its series with No. 1 Georgia as the two teams will meet today at 7 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNU with Mark Neely and Michele Smith calling the action from Rhoads Stadium.
