TUSCALOOA, Ala. - The Alabama rowing team followed up its fall season with a highly successful winter training program that got underway just after the New Year and lasted through last week. Now, the Crimson Tide is getting the spring season underway Sunday with a meet against Notre Dame and Minnesota at Oakridge, Tenn.
"We're going to face two NCAA Championship contenders in Notre Dame and Minnesota," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "They've been there before, they know what it's about they're very intense, high-level teams. My expectation, with the way we've trained through the winter and the competitive spirit that we've displayed, is that we're going to fight them all the way down the river."
The Tide's spring opener marks the second time this season the Tide has competed in Oakridge, after a five-medal performance at the Secret City Regatta at the end of October.
"I think we're very comfortable there and that it's kind of like a second home for us," junior co-captain Kristen Iverson said.
Sunday's races marks the first time since the first weekend in November that Alabama has faced outside competition.
"I think our team has done a really, really nice job this year in a keeping our goals in mind and training really hard for the spring season," senior co-captain Laura Skaggs said.
Alabama is taking five boats to the season opener which is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. CT.
