NEW ORLEANS - The 46th-ranked women's tennis team earned a 7-0 victory over Tulane on Sunday at the Goldring Tennis Center. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to 3-1 overall, while the Green Wave dips to 2-2 on the season.
"I thought we did a good job today," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I was proud that we got in control early and won the doubles point. One of our big goals today was to work on things we needed to improve on from yesterday. We want to win, but we also want to continue to work on what we need to to get better. Overall, it was a very productive weekend."
Alabama had a 1-2-3 finish in doubles to earn the early team point. The nation's sixth-ranked team of junior Courtney McLane and sophomore Alexa Guarachi topped Tulane junior Mariam Kurdadze and sophomore Emma Levy 8-3, and junior Taylor Lindsey and freshman Alex Clay followed that up with an 8-4 victory against junior Lindsay Dvorak and sophomore Emma Helisten on court two. Sophomore Antonia Foehse and freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane, ranked No. 32 in the country, would complete the doubles sweep with a close 8-7(6) win over junior Elizabeth Hamlin and sophomore Hila Elster.
All but one of the Tide's six singles wins was won in straight sets. First to finish was Lindsey on court six with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Helisten. No. 63 Guarachi would wrap up her match second collecting a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court two against Levy. Clay provided the match clincher on court four with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Dvorak.
Alabama and Tulane played out the remaining matches where No. 73 McLane topped Hamlin 6-4, 6-3, and No. 15 Macfarlane battled to defeat Kurdadze at No. 1, 6-1, 7-5. Foehse had her second three-setter of the weekend but ended up coming out with the victory in this one winning 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 over Elster.
The Tide will play its first home matches of the 2011 season next weekend when it hosts UCF on Saturday, Feb. 12 followed by Chattanooga on Sunday, Feb. 13. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m. CT.
