TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama gymnastics team hosts its seventh annual Power of Pink meet this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum. Fans are encouraged to "Think Pink and Wear Pink" as the Crimson Tide takes on the Kentucky Wildcats as well as helping raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
Tickets are available online at RollTide.com and through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum.
The first 3,500 fans through the doors will receive a pink T-shirt courtesy of Tuscaloosa Toyota and 2,500 fans will receive a souvenir ticket commemorating the Tide's 1991 NCAA Championship team, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary as part of the gymnastics team's alumni weekend.
There will also be 5,000 pink shakers as well as lots of other giveaways during the meet, such as iPads, 55-inch TVs, gift certificates and iPod Shuffles. In addition to those prizes, two UA students will go home with an iPad and eight more will win $50 gift certificates.
Two checks will be presented to the Alabama Gymnastics DCH Breast Cancer Fund during meet - one for $180,000, representing the amount raised over the past year and another for $1 million representing the total amount raised for the fund to this point.
Other `pink' related activities include:
- For the second year in a row, seventeen breast cancer survivors from the West Alabama area will be introduced in conjunction with the gymnasts prior to the meet.
- Coleman Coliseum will again be lit in pink Friday through a joint campus endeavor spearheaded by UA sculpture professor Craig Wedderspoon. This year the entire exterior of the Coliseum will be lit pink.
- The DCH Foundation is sponsoring a luminary sale again this year. The pink luminaries will be lit prior to the meet and will line the front of the Coliseum. For more information on the luminaries, go to www.supportdch.org.
- The Alabama women's basketball team will host the first "pink" event in the newly re-opened Foster Auditorium on Feb. 20 against Mississippi. It will mark the second game played at Foster since renovations were completed.
The Crimson Tide Rewards Program, also presented by Tuscaloosa Toyota, will be in full swing once again this Friday. Members of the program earn points for designated athletic events throughout the academic year and are eligible for prizes after just 10 events. Fans who attend 50+ events will be entered into a drawing to win a 2011 Toyota Camry. Fans who aren't already members can sign up at the meet.
