TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team opens its 2011 slate this weekend when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for the annual SEC Indoor Championships beginning Friday, Jan. 14. The Crimson Tide will be represented at the three-day event by senior Trey Walston, sophomore Ian Chadwell and freshmen Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga.
"We're anxious to get started with the spring season," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "This weekend we'll get to see our new freshman (Daniil Proskura) in action along with three other guys. I'm hopeful that we'll be 100 percent healthy as we start the schedule."
Walston won 10 matches throughout the fall season, with five coming in singles and five in doubles. He went on to claim the consolation draw finals of his flight at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships with each of his victories coming in straight sets. Chadwell picked up a combined seven victories this fall advancing to a pair of doubles quarterfinals, while Taborga also earned seven wins and reached the round of 16 in singles at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Proskura will be playing in his first tournament for Alabama as he joined the team at the beginning of January.
"We have some great events coming up in the next few weeks," Pate added. "They will certainly prepare us for the dual match season that starts January 29."
Following the SEC Indoor Championships, the Tide will take on the USTA National Boy's Team and will also compete in the USTA Futures Qualifying on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, respectively. Alabama will play its first matches of the season at home when it hosts a doubleheader with Troy and Furman on Feb. 5.
