TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Alabama freshman diver Callan Buck took sixth place off the 3-meter board at the FINA Junior World Championships, being held in Tucson, Ariz. this week.
Buck, in her first appearance as a member of the United States National Team, scored 418.10 points in finals, just 1.15 points behind Italy's Elana Bertocchi, who took fifth place and 13 points out of medaling. China's Tian Lio won the 3-meter event with 452.70 points. Buck turned in the United States' top finish in both prelims and finals. U.S. teammate Kaylea Arnett of Spring, Texas took 10th off the 3-meter with 397.50 points.
"Callan had a great week with the U.S. National Team and really performed well in her first international championship," Alabama head coach Eric McIlquham said. "There's no doubt that the experience of competing at this level will help her out down the road."
Buck scored a 420.55 over nine dives in the preliminaries to advance to the 3-meter finals. She came away with an average score of 6.98 in prelims, including a 7.5 on her final dive. She was joined at the Junior World Championships by Alabama diving coach Pat Greenwell who served as part of the international judging panel.
Buck and her Crimson Tide teammates open the collegiate season Saturday, Oct. 9 at home against Auburn starting at 11 a.m.
