TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team will continue fall play this weekend when it travels to Athens, Ga., to compete in the 43rd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships, the oldest fall college tennis tournament in the nation. The tournament begins Friday, Sept. 24, and ends Monday, Sept. 27.
"We're looking forward to getting back on the court this weekend in a very competitive atmosphere," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "The Southern Intercollegiate is always a tough event, and we'll have the opportunity to play against a variety of different players and teams. We need to improve on last weekend, and I'm confident we will do that."
The 2010 tournament features participants from a record 35 schools from around the Southeast including Southeastern Conference foes Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. Other teams in action this weekend will be UAB, Campbell, Central Florida, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Elon, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Liberty, Lipscomb, Memphis, Mercer, Miami (Fla.), Middle Tennessee State, UNC-Wilmington, Radford, Samford, South Alabama, South Florida, Stetson, Tennessee Tech, Winthrop and Wofford. The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions.
Seven Crimson Tide players were in action last weekend at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. The results were mixed overall for the team, but a few players did collect big wins on the weekend. Juniors Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson earned two wins each in singles, while senior Trey Walston picked up one. Thompson and sophomore Ian Chadwell posted the biggest doubles win for Alabama, taking down the No. 39 duo of junior Casey Watt and senior Stephen Havens from Notre Dame 8-4. Walston and freshman Carlos Taborga also collected a doubles victory over the Fighting Irish pair of senior Daniel Stahl and freshman Greg Andrews.
All seven players will be in action again this weekend. Play begins at 7 a.m. CT on Friday with singles at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
