NEW ORLEANS - The University of Alabama men's cross country team will open the 2010 season with a No. 5 national ranking according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross County Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) National Cross Country Poll released Tuesday by the organization.
The Crimson Tide earned the preseason ranking by virtue of returning All-American Moses Kiptoo and four total student-athletes, Kiptoo, Fred Samoei, Julius Bor and Andrew Kirwa, from last year's lineup that finished third at the 2009 NCAA Championships.
Stanford earned the top spot in the poll with 349 points and four first-place votes followed by defending national champion Oklahoma State with 339 points and seven first-place votes. Northern Arizona and Oregon tied for third followed by the Crimson Tide with 299 points.
UA will open its 2010 season on Sept. 10 at the UTC/Powerade Invite in Chattanooga, Tenn.
