Birmingham, Ala. -
The University of Alabama men's cross country was picked to win its third-straight Southeastern Conference championship as voted on by the coaches in the league's annual preseason poll released Wednesday.
Led by two-time reigning SEC Coach of the Year Joe Walker, the men's squad received seven of the 11 first-place votes to edge out 17-time SEC Champion Arkansas' four first-place votes. The Crimson Tide returns three All-SEC performers, Moses Kiptoo, Fred Samoei and Julius Bor, in search of its third-straight league crown and the fourth in the program's history.
"It's always good news when you see yourself in position to contend for a conference title based on voting by your peers," Walker said. "But we're going to have our work cut out for us. It's going to be a really tight race in the conference among the top two or three teams."
The men's team opens up its 2010 campaign September 10 at the UTC/Powerade Invitational. The 2010 SEC Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of South Carolina, will be held November 1 in Columbia, S.C.
