TOWSON, Md. - Senior Saketh Myneni has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large Third Team for the University Division, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Myneni is the first men's tennis student-athlete from the Capstone to achieve this honor.
"This is another tremendous honor for Saketh," UA head coach Billy Pate said. "One of our goals was to have someone on our team earn Academic All-America this year. It's very difficult, especially in sports with smaller roster sizes, so we are exceptionally proud for him. It's quite an achievement when you consider he was also just two spots away in the final singles rankings of being named All-America for his athletic talents."
Myneni, a native of Andhra Pradesh, India, currently holds a 3.805 grade point average in finance and economics. He was recently named the Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year for the Southern Region, which was selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Myneni was also named to the All-SEC First Team for the second straight year, along with being named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis. He was a finalist for the Paul W. Bryant Award, which is given to Alabama's top scholar-athlete, and was selected as the Crimson Tide's male nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship.
Myneni ended the 2010 season with a final singles ranking of No. 22 in the nation. He finished with 21 singles wins on the season, including winning 11 straight before falling in the Round of 32 in the 2010 NCAA Men's Singles Championships.
The sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo are all included in the Men's At-Large program for Academic All-America. In total, 15 student-athletes were selected to the First Team, 16 to the Second Team and 17 to the Third Team.
