TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team was represented well in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2010 final rankings as freshman Alexa Guarachi and sophomore Courtney McLane finished as the No. 15 doubles pair in the nation. In addition, Guarachi ranked No. 56 on the singles poll.
"I'm proud of Alexa and Courtney's top 15 national finish in doubles," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "This should put them in an opportune position to begin the 2010-2011 season with a spark and in good position for some ITA Grand Slams."
Guarachi and McLane qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship where the duo advanced to the Round of 16. Both netters were named to the All-SEC Second Team with Guarachi also finding a place on the All-SEC Freshman Team.
"Alexa and Courtney had a strong showing in their doubles performance at the NCAA Championships," Mainz added. "I felt that Courtney and Alexa gained momentum and played more commanding doubles as the season progressed. They played their best tennis in May at NCAAs."
In addition to playing with McLane in doubles, Guarachi was selected to participate in the NCAA Singles Championships becoming the first Crimson Tide player to qualify since Robin Stephenson did so in 2006. Guarachi is just the third player in Alabama women's tennis history to qualify for both the Singles and Doubles Championships in a career. Her stellar freshman campaign was capped off by being named the 2010 Southern Region Freshman of the Year by the ITA.
"Alexa and Courtney worked hard with much resolve and diligence to give Alabama tennis an end-of-the-season push," Mainz said. "Our team will benefit from their strong finish."
