ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Saketh Myneni ended his stellar career at the Capstone with loss to Georgia Tech junior Guillermo Gomez in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Gomez, the tournament's No. 4 seed, topped 21st-ranked Myneni 7-6(5), 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16 on Friday.
"Saketh played a good first match and certainly had chances in his first set today," head coach Billy Pate said. "I'm disappointed his career is over for us. He is not only one of the most talented players we have had, but he is also a tremendous person and will be sorely missed."
Myneni and Gomez were neck-and-neck heading into the first set tiebreaker where the Yellow Jacket netter narrowly edged the Tide senior 7-5. In the second, Gomez was able to earn an early break which was all he needed to close out the set. Myneni held serve to set the score at 5-4 to stay alive, however Gomez would serve out the match in the next game.
"I'll always be thankful for the job he did during his entire senior year playing with a tear in his right shoulder," Pate said. "He gave us as much as he could, and it's unfortunate he couldn't have been healthier. He's been an outstanding ambassador for our team, and the University of Alabama."
