ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Saketh Myneni won his first NCAA Singles Championship match Wednesday beating Radford junior Ivan Salec in the Round of 64 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus. Myneni, ranked 21st, won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 over 79th-ranked Salec to advance to the Round of 32 on Thursday and continue his 11-match win streak.
"I was very pleased to see Saketh advance today," head coach Billy Pate said. "He played a tough opponent, and it was a close match. I think he had some first round nerves, but he really served well down the stretch."
Myneni picked up an early break in the first set to go up 2-0 before Salec was able to win a game. The Crimson Tide netter continued to roll taking the 5-2 advantage. Salec earned one more game in the opening set, but Myneni would close it out in the proceeding game for the 6-3 victory.
In the second, it would be Salec coming out on top by the same score. The set was even at 2-2 as Salec went on to win three consecutive games. Myneni picked up an additional game before Salec closed out the second to send the match into a third.
The final set began similar to the second, however it would be all Myneni in the end as the senior won four of the last five games to take the set and the match.
Myneni will now take on Georgia Tech junior Guillermo Gomez, the tournament's No. 4 seed, on Thursday, May 27. Times are yet to be determined. Myneni and Gomez last met in the Round of 64 in the 2009 NCAA Singles Championships where Gomez won 6-4, 6-2.
