TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Senior gymnast Kassi Price was one of four Alabama student-athletes voted to the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Team, which was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Thursday.
Price is the ninth Crimson Tide gymnast to earn Academic All-District honors and the first to earn the accolade three years in a row. The at-large team spans 13 women's sports including bowling, rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
"Kassi continues to reap the rewards of her truly awesome career," UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. "She is the first Alabama gymnast to be named first team all-district three times, marking another milestone moment in her career. We are obviously very proud of all she's accomplished."
Price joins Julie Estin (1986 and 1987), Kelly Good (1988), Dana Dobransky (1993 and 1992), Meredith Willard (1997), Merritt Booth (1998), Kristin Sterner (2003), Stephanie Kite (2003 and 2004) and Cassie Martin (2007) as UA gymnasts who were voted to Academic All-District Team. Price, Estin, Good, Dobransky, Willard, Booth, Sterner and Kite all went on to earn Academic All-American honors.
A three-year All-American and a member of Alabama's 2009 SEC Championship team, Price carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average with a double major in advertising and marketing. An NCAA and SEC Postgraduate Scholarship winner, she is a two-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-American At-Large Team, earning first team honors in 2009 and second team in 2008.
Winner of the inaugural NCAA Elite 88 Award, Price is the 2010 Bryant Award winner and the 2010 Austin Cup winner, awarded to the top senior in UA's Culverhouse School of Commerce and Business Administration. The vice president of UA's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Price was also named to the SEC Gymnastics Community Service Team this season.
Price was joined on the all-district list by UA senior diver Elizabeth Hughes, senior tennis player Saketh Myneni and sophomore golfer Hunter Slatton. Price, Hughes and Myneni were all named to the first team and will move on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
"This award speaks to the dedication that each has to their sport and academics," Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever said. "To have one student-athlete earn a spot on the at-large team is quite an accomplishment, but to have four, with three on the first team, is remarkable."
Alabama and Ohio State both led the way with three first-team honorees. Price is a three-time member of the all-district first team, while Hughes and Myneni were both second team all-district honorees last season.
