TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team continued its winning ways by defeating No. 9/7 Georgia Tech 13-1 in five innings Wednesday night at the Alabama Softball Complex. With the win the Crimson Tide has now won 16 straight and ends the month of April without a loss. Alabama improves to 40-9 on the season while Georgia Tech moves to 43-9 overall.
"I think everyone was ready to play tonight," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "Offensively, defensively and pitching were strong against a very good team. We knocked the starter out early and the key for us was that we just kept on hitting and never had that lull."
Four different Tide players collected multi-hit games and three drove in two or more runs as Alabama pounded out 12 hits to down the Yellow Jackets. Alabama pitcher Kelsi Dunne fanned eight and allowed one run on two hits to improve to 21-4 on the year.
Charlotte Morgan tallied two hits and two RBI while Amanda Locke collected two hits, including a three-run homer to pace the Tide at the plate. Kendall Dawson drove in three while Kayla Braud and Keima Davis recorded two hits apiece to add to the Alabama attack.
With the win Alabama extends its longest winning streak on the season and finished off the month of April with a perfect 16-0 record. The matchup between the two programs pitted the No. 1 (Alabama) and No. 5 (Georgia Tech) teams in the RPI rankings.
The Tide opened the scoring with three runs in the first and never looked back as it plated five in the second, three more in the third and two in the fourth to cap off the day.
Morgan tallied the big hit to start the game in the first with her first career triple, clearing the bases by scoring Kayla Braud and Cassie Reilly-Boccia. Whitney Larsen capped off the frame with a sac-fly to center.
In the second Locke opened the game wide open as she tattooed a homer over the left-centerfield fence to expand the lead to 6-0 after Braud started the inning by scoring on a wild pitch. Dawson added to the scoring by driving home Courtney Conley on a single up the middle.
In the third Conley took a bases loaded walk to bring home pinch-runner Lisa Elizondo and Davis singled up the middle to plate Locke and give the Tide a commanding 11-0 lead.
After Georgia Tech finally got to Dunne for their lone run of the game, Alabama answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to finish with the final 13-1 tally.
Pinch-hitter Catherine Dozier knocked in Reilly-Boccia on a 3-2 pitch that she slipped through on the left side and Dawson capped off her day with her third RBI of the night, driving in Morgan.
