KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The 50th-ranked women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision Sunday to No. 11 Tennessee moving the Crimson Tide to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the Southeastern Conference. With the win, the Lady Volunteers improve to 8-4 on the season and 2-0 against league opponents.
"This was a very disappointing match for us," UA head coach Jenny Mainz said following the loss. "We did not think today was going to go this way. We had opportunities and just didn't take advantage at all. We came out flat with no energy whatsoever."
Alabama found itself down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 2. Tennessee had to forfeit court three, so the Lady Vols needed to sweep to get the doubles point. The matchup at No. 1 finished first as senior Caitlin Whoriskey and junior Maria Sorbello took down sophomore Courtney McLane and freshman Alexa Guarachi, ranked 47th, 8-3. Tennessee had no trouble on court two as well with the No. 33 ranked pair of senior Zsofia Zubor and junior Rosalia Alda winning 8-0 against Tide seniors Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru.
Alabama was awarded an early point in singles with the Lady Vol forfeit at No. 6, but Tennessee wasted no time pulling ahead to take the dual match win with consecutive victories at No. 3, No. 1 and No. 4. On court three, Alda swept junior Meritt Emery 6-0, 6-0 before 10th-ranked Whoriskey finished with a 6-1, 6-0 win over McLane. Zubor clinched the win for Tennessee shortly after with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Bigos.
No. 78 Guarachi added a second point for the Tide with a 6-2, 7-5 win over 47th-ranked Sorbello at No. 2 singles. Guarachi has now won eight singles matches in a row and is 4-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. Freshman Antonia Foehse nearly added another win for Alabama, but was edged 6-7(4), 6-3, 1-0(5) by Lady Vol sophomore Katie Lee on court five.
Alabama returns to action Friday, March 12 when it hosts South Carolina. Opening serve is slated for 3:00 p.m. (CST).
