NEW ORLEANS - Alabama's No. 7 women's golf fired its lowest round of the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic in the final round on Sunday at the par-72, 6,132-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club to finish in third place.
The Crimson Tide carded a 2-over-par 290 in the third round to edge host LSU for the third spot at 33-over-par 897. Auburn won the tournament at 25-over-par 889 with TCU seven shots back at 896, just one shot better than Alabama. LSU carded 901 strokes to finish fourth with Virginia rounding out the top five.
"This tournament was an educational experience for us this weekend," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We learned how to play in the wind and control the trajectory of our shots.
"We played well today, just not good enough to overcome a bad round on Saturday. We just need to play each shot to the best of our capabilities every time out on the course and we can compete with anybody."
Junior Camilla Lennarth and sophomore Brooke Pancake finished tied for ninth individually to lead the Crimson Tide at 6-over-par 222. Lennarth posted her second straight 75 while Pancake rebounded from an 80 on Saturday with an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round.
True freshman Jennifer Kirby was one shot back of both Lennarth and Pancake in a tie for 12th place at 7-over-par 223. She shot 2-over 74 in the final round after opening with a 71 and following that with a 78 in round two.
Senior Helena Blomberg fired the Crimson Tide's low round of the day with a 3-under-par 69 to move up to 41st at 230. Her 69 on Sunday was her first round in the 60s since her freshman year.
"Helena put together one of those rounds that she is capable of doing every time she plays," Potter said. "She just relaxed today and had some fun out there and it showed with a 69 and our best round of the day."
Senior Rhea Nair played her best round of the weekend with a 4-over-par 76 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 90th at 240.
Alabama will have almost two weeks off traveling to Athens, Ga., for the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on March 26-28 at the University Club looking to improve on the Tide's second-place finish a year ago.
