NEW ORLEANS - The University of Alabama's seventh-ranked women's golf team leads the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic after 18 holes of play on Friday with a 5-over-par score of 293 on the par-72, 6,132-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club layout.
The Crimson Tide hold a one-stroke advantage over tournament co-host LSU (+6, 294) and a three-stroke lead on third-place Virginia (+8, 296). Mississippi is in fourth at 12-over-par 300 with North Carolina rounding out the top five at 14-over 302.
No. 4 Purdue and No. 22 Vanderbilt are tied for sixth at 303 (+15) while third-ranked Auburn and No. 11 Tennessee are tied for eighth-place at 17-over-par 305.
"I thought the team got off to a great start in difficult conditions," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "The wind was blowing 15-20 mph and that made a few of the holes very difficult. We held on to the lead coming in and displayed some real creativity in our short game today that really helped us put up some good scores. Brooke (Pancake), Jennifer (Kirby) and Camilla (Lennarth) really played well, but we have to keep it up because there is a lot of golf left to play."
Alabama sophomore Brooke Pancake, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., is tied for first individually after an opening-round 70 that included five birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. Joining her atop the leaderboard is LSU's Tessa Teachman. UA freshman Jennifer Kirby is one shot back at 1-under-par 71 after carding five birdies and four bogeys on the round.
Junior Camilla Lennarth is at even-par 72 and is in a seven-way tie for fourth place entering Saturday's second round. She finished her opening nine holes at 1-under-par 35 and entered her final hole of the day at 2-under par, but finished with a double-bogey six on the 18th hole.
Helena Blomberg and Rhea Nair rounded out the Crimson Tide scoring on Friday. Blomberg counted as Alabama's fourth score of the afternoon with an 8-over-par 80 and is tied for 81st while Nair shot a nine-over 81 and is tied for 91st.
