EL PASO, Texas - University of Alabama junior golfers Hunter Hamrick and Bud Cauley will compete in the 36th edition of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic at the par-71, 6,842-yard El Paso Country Club on Nov. 22-23.
Hamrick, who won last year's tournament with a career-low 11-under-par 202, defends his title against perhaps the strongest field of the year. Last season, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic ranked as the No. 1 tournament in the country for the sixth consecutive season, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
This year, thirty-two golfers including the United States Amateur champion and the NCAA champion will compete in the invitation-only tournament. The field includes seven of the top 11 amateur golfers in the world, according to the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Hamrick and Cauley both had very successful fall campaigns for the No. 3 ranked Crimson Tide. As a team, Alabama won two of its four fall tournaments and finished no worse than fourth. Cauley's tie for third at the Olympia Field/Fighting illini Invitational was his highest individual finish of the year, while his 71.17 scoring average was second best on the team. Hamrick finished with a 73.58 scoring average, garnering a 16th place in the JPNI for his best showing of the year.
Past Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic champions have included Alabama's own Jerry Pate (1974), Ricky Barnes (2000), Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Matt Kuchar (1999), Davis Love III (1984), Chris Nallen (2003), Nicholas Thompson (2004) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Alumni of the Golf Classic have gone on to earn more than $1.3 billion and win 540 events on the PGA Tour. In all, 139 colleges and universities have participated in the tournament, raising more than $670,000 in scholarship money for the participating institutions.
Each university is awarded a $1,000 scholarship if a golfer from that school competes in the tournament.
