STATESBORO, Ga. - Freshman Jasmine Robinson scored a game-high 16 points as Alabama beat Georgia Southern 65-55 Friday at Hanner Fieldhouse. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to 4-0 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 1-2 overall.
"This group of young ladies cares about how they play and are not just satisfied with a win," Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson said. "All in all though, this team keeps getting better. This was a tough place to play, and I am really proud of how we were able to finish."
Joining Robinson with double-figure points was senior Tierney Jenkins and junior Ericka Russell, who scored 12 and 11, respectively. Jenkins also added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. In addition, she moved up to No. 16 on Alabama's all-time scoring list passing Cassandra Crumpton. Jenkins now has 1,097 career points.
Russell put the Tide on the board first with a wide-open three pointer at the 19:04 mark. Jenkins then laid it in just 10 seconds later after a steal giving Alabama a 5-0 lead. The Tide never trailed in the opening stanza and built as much as a 16-point lead with 51 seconds to go.
For the half, Alabama shot 41.4 percent from the floor hitting 12 of its 29 attempts while holding Georgia Southern to just 28.6 percent (6-for-21). The Tide forced 15 Eagle turnovers while committing only six. In addition, Alabama had nine steals compared to Georgia Southern's one.
The Tide remained on top throughout the second half, but the Eagles threatened late cutting the Alabama lead to just five with 1:29 to play. Thanks to a series of free throws down the stretch, the Tide was able to come away with the win.
Free throws accounted for 34 of the 73 second half points scored between the two teams with Alabama connecting on 17-of-27 shots, while Georgia Southern hit 17 of its 22 attempts.
"Everything we did was not bad, but we did not do a good job of keeping our hands off," Hudson added. "When you send a team to the line that many times and come out with a win on the road, it is a good thing."
Alabama returns to the court Tuesday, Nov. 23 when it hosts McNeese State in Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
