HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Alabama rowing team sent two Novice boats to the Hobbs Island Regatta this weekend, and came away with a third and sixth-place finish.
The Crimson Tide's rookies struggled at points on the course, but also put forth good efforts at points in trying to make up ground after mistakes.
"We made some novice mistakes," head coach Larry Davis said. "Luckily they're things we should be able to correct and get polished before our next outing at the Secret City Regatta. By that point we should have our talent show up and not make some of these inadvertent mistakes. We rowed fairly well, we just can't put ourselves in a hole like we did and have the kind of success we want to have."
Alabama's first Novice 8+ boat rowed up a division in the Championship 8+ race against more experienced crews and took third place with a tie of 19:05.00. The Tide's second Novice 8+ also rowed up a division, competing in the First Novice 8+ race, taking sixth with a time of 22:48.00.
"We made progress from last week to this week, but not enough to get done what we wanted to get done," assistant coach Derek Tuten said. "Last year we won both these races. We would have had to row very well to do that again this year, but we didn't even put ourselves in a position to have that kind of success."
Alabama's Novice group opened with a strong showing at the Chattanooga Head Race last weekend, winning the Novice 8+ race by nearly a minute.
