ATLANTA - Freshman Jarryd Botha earned a 7-6, 6-3 win Saturday on the second day of play at the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships being held at the Racquet Club of the South.
"Jarryd (Botha) continues to get better every time he walks out on the court," assistant coach Bo Hodge said. "He beat a very good player today. Ian (Chadwell) played better today but just didn't convert on the big points. I look for him to continue to improve as he gets more matches under his belt. Both doubles teams lost to very good teams, however I'm excited about the direction in which our doubles is heading."
Along with Botha, sophomore Creighton Blanchard and freshman Ian Chadwell also competed in singles. Chadwell was edged by Kentucky senior Alex Lambropoulos 6-4, 7-6(5), while Blanchard fell in a close decision as well 6-3, 7-6(3) to Mississippi's Adrian Forberg Skogeng.
In doubles, both Crimson Tide pairs fell to their respective Tennessee opponents with sophomore Ricky Doverspike and Chadwell falling 8-2 to senior Davey Sandgren and junior J.P. Smith, and Blanchard and Botha losing 8-3 to junior Boris Conkic and freshman Tennys Sandgren.
Botha will take part in the final round of consolation action Sunday when he takes on Kentucky junior Alberto Gonzalez at 9:30 a.m. (CST).
