ATHENS, Ga. - The men's tennis team earned one win on Saturday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships which is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus. For the second day in a row, rain hampered play at the tournament forcing matches to take place inside.
"It was even more frustrating today with the continued rainfall," said head coach Billy Pate. "This is one of the biggest tournaments of the year number-wise, so it really gets backlogged with the poor weather."
The Crimson Tide was only able to get three matches in, all of which were singles. Junior Trey Walston picked up the lone victory taking down Charlotte sophomore Charles Martin, convincingly, by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Senior Houssam Yassine and sophomore Creighton Blanchard also saw court time Saturday with both dropping two-set decisions. Yassine fell 7-5, 6-2 to Alberto Diaz of Citadel, while College of Charleston junior Mikael Boyer beat Blanchard 6-1, 6-1.
"Trey Walston registered a solid win today," added Pate. He took on a good player in Charles Martin."
Play in the tournament continues Sunday and wraps up Monday.
