TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama sophomore to be Bud Cauley shot four rounds of par or better to claim the title at the 10th annual Players Amateur Championship on the par-72, 7,080-yard West Course at the Belfair Country Club in Hilton Head, S.C. over the weekend.
Cauley topped the 80-player field that consisted of four first-team All-Americans from last season and many of the top amateurs from around the world. The Jacksonville, Fla., native finished the tournament with a total of 6-under-par 282, two strokes ahead of his nearest competition George Bryan IV (284).
Though he did not shoot the lowest score in any single round, Cauley's consistency proved to be the difference as he was the only player to shoot par or better all four days. He posted his best 18-hole score in round one with a 69 (-3) that included five birdies. Cauley holed 16 birdies over the course of the tournament.
The victory earns Cauley a spot in next year's Verizon Heritage, a PGA Tour event held on Hilton Head Island. Cauley is also in contention for the prestigious Campbell Award presented to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the Northeast Amateur, Players Amateur and Porter Cup. With only the Porter Cup remaining, Cauley is currently in second place at 9-under par after shooting 3-under-par at the Northeast Amateur to finish tied for ninth. He is two strokes behind leader Daniel Woltman in the chase for the Campbell Award.
The Players Amateur began in 2000 as a premier event for amateur golfers. Ben Curtis, who went on to win a British Open, won the inaugural event.
