TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Men's tennis junior Saketh Myneni will hit the courts Wednesday for his first round match in the 2009 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships being held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. He will face Georgia Tech sophomore Guillermo Gomez at 3:00 p.m. (CST). The two met earlier this season where Gomez came out on top 6-4, 6-1.
Both Gomez and Myneni were named ITA Player to Watch in their respective regions last week. Gomez is a 2009 All-American and All-SEC selection currently holding a singles record of 28-9. After just two seasons, he is already making his way into the record books standing at No. 6 on the school's all-time winning percentage list at .724.
Myneni finished up the season with a singles record of 19-10 and was named All-SEC First Team. This season alone he has defeated 11 nationally ranked opponents including three ranked in the top 10. Compared to last season, Myneni nearly doubled his win total at No. 1 singles from last season posting a 14-7 record in dual match play.
He was honored with the 2009 Blue Gray National Collegiate Tennis Classic Sportsmanship Award, received SEC Player of the Week recognition on April 20 and was named Alabama's Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player at the team's award ceremony.
