BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama junior Ricki Lebegern has been named to the sixth-annual Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Community Service Team, marking the second year in a row that the Annandale, Va. native has earned the honor.
"Working to make the world around us a better place is one of the most important aspects of our program," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said. "Ricki is certainly a wonderful representative of our program, in the gym, in the classroom and certainly, as this honor demonstrates, in the area of community service."
The SEC Community Service Team represents seven gymnasts, one from each competing institution. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
The Crimson Tide's most prolific all-arounder this season, Lebegern's contribution to the University of Alabama as a whole can just as easily be described as "all-around". A three-time Southeastern Conference Champion and two-year All-SEC performer who has been ranked in the top-20 in the all-around nationally all season, Lebegern is also a two-year Scholastic All-American and two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll in the classroom, carrying a 3.6 grade point average.
Above all that, she is also a vital member of the University and Tuscaloosa community. She has worked with the Stallings RISE center on several different projects as well as leading bible studies as part of the Crimson Tide's FCA. She also helped raise money for the Suds for Sully and Project AngelTree campaigns, hosted local children as part of the Tide's Halloween Extravaganza and took part in the Easter Seals Walk. In addition to those projects, she is a member of UA's Student-Athlete Advisory Council .
The other members of the 2009 SEC Gymnastic Community Serivce Team are: Michelle Stout, Arkansas; A.J. Mills, Auburn; Alicia Goodwin, Florida; Marcia Newby, Georgia; Natalie Rubinstein, Kentucky; Ashleigh Clare-Kearney, LSU.
