TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - With spring in the air, the Alabama Rowing team is set to crank things up again, starting at the Clemson Regatta this Saturday against Clemson, Penn and Marist on Lake Hartwell. The Crimson Tide will face tough competition with the homestanding Crimson Tigers ranked 13th and Penn receiving votes in the national poll.
"We're coming off a good fall season of competition and we've carried that over into our training this winter," Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. "This weekend we're opening up the spring season at Clemson against a very challenging field."
Alabama, in its third season as an NCAA Division I program, is sending two Varsity 8+ boats, two Varsity 4+ boats and a Novice 8+ boat to South Carolina.
Alabama is coming off an impressive fall, which included a dozen top-10 finishes by the Varsity and seven top-5 finishes by the Novices. Davis has his aim squarely on making his young program into a top tier team in a short amount of time and this fall saw his charges continue upon that track.
Among the Varsity's top races this fall was a 10th place finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. and a win in the Collegiate 4+ race at the Head of the Tennessee Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Tide's Novices posted wins in the 8+ races at the Head of the Hobbs Regatta in Huntsville, the Head of the Tennessee and the Head of the Hooch.
Just a few days after opening its spring season at Clemson, Alabama returns to Tuscaloosa for its first home meet of the year, Tuesday (March 17) against Kansas State. The races are slated to get underway at 11:30 a.m. on the Black Warrior River.
