TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 2008 men's cross country team was honored Saturday for winning the SEC Cross Country Championship during the fall of 2008. The 1973 team, the only other Alabama team to win the elusive title, joined them for the celebration.
The 2008 squad, much like the 1973 team, had finished in the top three for three straight years before winning the title in the fourth year. The 1973 team took down a Tennessee team that had won seven of the past ten SEC Titles while the 2008 team ended Arkansas' streak of 17 straight conference championships.
However, it was a much closer battle in 1973 when they only won by six points over Tennessee. The 2008 team won by 30 points over Auburn.
In dominating fashion, the 2008 Crimson Tide team placed five athletes in the top 10. The cross country team had five athletes earn 2008 All-SEC. The Crimson Tide honorees are Tyson David, Emmanuel Bor, Augustus Maiyo, Abraham Kutingala and Andrew Kirwa.
Cross country coach Joe Walker was also honored in 2008 with his second SEC Coach of the Year award.
On the 2008 SEC Championship team was:
Emmanuel Bor, Nathan Corder, Tyson David, Austin Duckworth, Zac Edwards, Andrew Kirwa, Titus Koeh, Abraham Kutingala, Augustus Maiyo, Stephen Payne, Head Coach Harvey Glance, Cross Country Coach Joe Walker, Assistant Coach Victor Houston, Trainer Bernard Burroughs, Manager Masa Takano
