
Crimson Tide Golfers Open Play at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The fourth-ranked Alabama men's golf resumes its 2009 spring schedule on Friday and defends its title at the Puerto Rico Classic on the par 72, 6,945-yard Rio Mar River Course.
The Crimson Tide begins play at the three-round, 54-hole event on Friday, February 27. The second 18 holes are slated for Saturday, Feb. 28 with the final round on Sunday, March 1. Alabama captured the 2008 Puerto Rico Classic with a 10-under-par score of 854 as Matthew Swan garnered medalist honors with a 12-under 204.
UA is coming off of a seventh-place finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday. The Tide will start seniors Swan and Phillip Hughes in Puerto Rico along with true freshman Bud Cauley and redshirt freshmen Hunter Hamrick and Spencer Cole. Hughes replaced Hunter Slatton in the starting lineup for the Puerto Rico Classic after Slatton finished tied for 22nd at the John Hayt.
The Puerto Rico Classic, which is hosted by Purdue, consists of 15 teams all ranked inside Golfweek's top 70 collegiate teams. The field includes four of the top five teams in the nation with No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Oklahoma State, the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 5 Florida.
Following the Puerto Rico Classic, the Crimson Tide will take a few weeks off before beginning play at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on March 22-24.
