TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head women's cross country coach Randy Hasenbank announced the signing of Katlyn Will and Elsbeth Denton to a National Letter of Intent. Will joins the Tide from Corinth, Miss. where she currently competes for Corinth High School. Denton joins the Tide from Vestavia Hills, Ala. where she currently competes for Vestavia Hills High School.
Rated one of the top milers in the country, Will has garnered more than 10 individual state titles in track and cross country during her high school career. In addition, she has led her team to four consecutive state cross country and track and field team titles. Katlyn posted a time of 4:55 for the mile last spring at the Mobile Meet of Champions and ran 2:14 for 800 meters at the Mississippi State Championships in May.
"Katlyn is versatile and possesses very, very good speed," Hasenbank said. "She is tall and athletic and has great running mechanics. I really look forward to working with her. I think she can be a tremendous miler and 1500 meter runner at this level. She will make a smooth transition, both, academically and athletically. Academics are a high priority to Katlyn and is currently ranked number one in her class."
Denton has earned numerous running honors that include 6A state cross country runner-up honors in 2007. In addition to earning all-state honors in cross country, Denton has regularly placed among the top finishers in the sectional and state track and field championships during her four years at Vestavia Hills. Voted "Most Outstanding Runner" at Vestavia Hills, Denton will come to the Capstone with impressive academic credentials as well. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Denton's older brother, Will Denton, runs for Samford University.
"Elsbeth is going to benefit greatly by joining the group of young ladies that we have assembled here in Tuscaloosa," Hasenbank said. "She is full of potential, very determined and eager to compete at the next level. She is a very strong runner and has a tremendous work ethic. Elsbeth is a team player and will do what it takes to become successful at this level and I am looking forward to working with her."
Will and Denton will bring their impressive academic and athletic credentials to the Capstone in August.
