TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - With exams behind them, the Alabama swimming and diving teams are back in action this week. For the swimmers, it's a week-long training camp in Florida with temperatures in the 80s and the sun shining each day. For the divers, after a three-day training camp here in Tuscaloosa the first part of this week, they are getting back into competition, hosting the Christmas Diving Classic Dec. 17-19.
"For the divers, it's a good opportunity to see some great competition, the kind of divers they'll see at SEC Championships as well as the Zone meets and the NCAA Championships," Alabama head coach Eric McIlquham said. "Our divers had a tremendous fall and now they're looking to keep that rolling right into the championship season."
The Crimson Tide welcomes Auburn, LSU and Georgia Tech to the Alabama Aquatic Center. Competition begins Thursday, Dec. 17 with the men on the three-meter board and the women on the one-meter. Preliminaries start at 10:45 a.m. There will be another round of diving for those not making finals starting at 12:45 p.m. Finals will start at 5 p.m. with the women going first then the men's finals will get underway at 5:45 p.m.
The meet will follow the same format on Friday with the men on the one-meter board and the women on the three-meter. Saturday's competition will start at 11 a.m. and both the men and women will be competing on the platform.
Alabama's men are led by All-American Aaron Fleshner while All-American Carrie Dragland leads the women's squad. Both Fleshner and Dragland have been named SEC Diver of the Week three times each already this season.
The swimmers will complete their training camp this week before taking a few days off for the holidays and will then return to Tuscaloosa for another training camp before classes get underway once again.
