TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's basketball team (2-1) will hit the road again Saturday when it takes on Belmont (2-0) in Nashville, Tenn. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. (CST) in the Curb Event Center.
"This team is getting tested early learning how to play on the road and in tough environments," said head coach Wendell Hudson. "I'm excited for us to play another road game and see how we've improved from our last one against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This is just another test for our team as it grows up."
Alabama enters Saturday's contest fresh off a 40-point victory against Jackson State on Tuesday. All 13 Crimson Tide players managed to get on the board against the Lady Tigers providing for a balanced offensive effort that night. Alabama was led in points by senior Dedrea Magee and junior Tierney Jenkins, who registered 10 points apiece. Jenkins was also the Tide's top rebounder with eight boards, while redshirt freshman Candace Sykes racked up an impressive four blocks in the contest.
Alabama will be looking to hand the Bruins their first loss Saturday as Belmont currently stands at 2-0 on the season with wins over Central Arkansas and UT Martin. The Bruins are averaging just over 70 points per game thus far with point production split near even between two-pointers, three-pointers and free throws. Belmont has little hesitation when it comes to shooting the three as the Bruins attempt 25 shots from beyond the arc per outing. Last time out, sophomore Haley Nelson had an all-around stellar game with 19 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks. In Belmont's season opener, senior Amber Rockwell, who hails from Tuscaloosa, scored 33 points.
Saturday's game marks the seventh meeting in the series between Alabama and Belmont. The Tide currently owns a 4-2 advantage including a win last season at home against the Bruins. The series dates back to the 1977 season, but a large gap in play followed as the second meeting didn't come until Jan. 6, 2000.
