Each Tuesday throughout the course of the season, Rolltide.com will feature highlights from a moment in Alabama women’s basketball history that happened during that week. This is the second installment of Throwback Tuesday.
On Nov. 19, 1998, the Crimson Tide faced in-state rival Samford in Birmingham. It was Alabama’s first road game of the season, and the Tide took the game in commanding fashion 96-52. The win was part of a seven game winning streak to open the 1998-99 season.
Alabama took control of the game early with aggressive defense and hot shooting. The Tide put up 50 points in the first half, while holding the Bulldogs to just 27. Samford could never get going offensively, only managing to shoot 28.8 percent from the field and committing 27 turnovers. Alabama also had its share of turnovers (24), but was able to overcome them by shooting 47.4 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Bulldogs 57-35. The Tide had three players finish in double figures, led by All-American senior guard Dominique Canty, who scored 23 points on 11-18 shooting. Alabama also had two players haul in at least 10 rebounds, as senior LaToya Caudle grabbed 11 and Latrish Jones pulled in 10.
The Tide finished the 98-99 season with a 20-11 record, including 7-7 in SEC action. It was the eighth consecutive year that head coach Rick Moody guided his team to at least 20 wins. Alabama once again earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, falling in the Second Round to North Carolina 70-56 in Chapel Hill.
