TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 9 Alabama men's cross country team is through seven weeks of the 2009 season under cross country coach Joe Walker and just a short four weeks until the championship portion of the year begins.
Last week was a shorter week in training for the Crimson Tide as they had to leave on Thursday for a Friday afternoon meet in Eugene, Ore. Alabama would eventually knock off the No. 1 Men of Oregon who are also the two-time defending NCAA Champions.
"The week was obviously approached a little differently with the long trip out to Eugene on Thursday," Walker said. "We were able to fit a fartlek in on Tuesday morning which was around 45 minutes total and then had to go very light on Wednesday. We jogged about 30 minutes on the course on Thursday and then competed Friday."
The Crimson Tide defeated the Ducks at the Bill Dellinger Invitational by a score of 53 to 71. Alabama was led by Tyson David and Moses Kiptoo who provided a 1-2 finish in the meet.
"To come away with the win out there was big for this team and their confidence," Walker said. "They went out there specifically to prove a point that we `belonged'. Now we have to continue to gain fitness and get prepared for November."
Alabama will take a week off in preparation for Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. to be held on Oct. 17 on the NCAA Championship course.
