TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Gymnastics team hosted its annual Ghosts and Goblins intrasquad Sunday in the Frances Smith Practice Facility in Coleman Coliseum with the Goblins coming out on top by a slim margin in front of a crowd of more than 100 fans.
"Some of our ladies, when we talked afterwards, mentioned that they were a little nervous," head coach Sarah Patterson said. "So I'd like to thank the fans for coming out and not only cheering us on but helping us overcome some of those jitters and helping us prepare for the season as well."
The Goblins won the annual competition for the fourth time in five years. Freshman Marissa Gutierrez led the Goblins in total points while sophomore Geralen Stack-Eaton was the high-point scorer on the day.
"I'm really proud of where Geralen is at this point in the season," Patterson said. "She was leading the way coming into this weekend and was able to carry that progress over into a competitive situation, which was great. She's made great strides this fall and is even ahead of where she was at the end of last season."
Among those in attendance were several gymnastics alumni, including four-time NCAA Champion Ashley Miles, Kaitlin White, Lauren Pruitt, Courtney Priess and Ann Woods Shealy. Patterson said that the annual intrasquad, which includes both teams dressing up and cheering in the theme of their team name and Halloween, was one of the fun parts of preseason training.
"I think everyone looks forward to it every year," Patterson said. "The team spirit, for both the Ghosts and Goblins was great today and I think everyone had a lot of fun."
