WILMINGTON, N.C. - The No. 11 Alabama women's golf team fired its best round of the Landfall Tradition in Sunday's final round to finish ninth at 39-over-par 903 on the par-72 Dye Course at the Country Club of the Landfall.
The Crimson Tide's 7-over-par 295 vaulted them six spots up the scoreboard. Duke took the team title with an 881 (+17), one stroke better than UCLA. The Tide's 295 on Sunday was the third-best score of the final round on course that will host the 2010 NCAA Championships in May.
"In a field like this you can't be too discouraged about a top 10 finish, but we could have played a lot better," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said following the third round. "I was encouraged that we bounced back today with a good round. That's shows me that we have some focus and some competitiveness. At the same time, we have some things we have to improve on."
Junior Camilla Lennarth shot a 3-under-par 69 in round three, the lowest score of any individual on the day, to climb back into contention, eventually finishing tied for third at 216 (E).
"Camilla played well," Potter said. "It is pretty simple and straight forward when you hit 15 greens and sink a few 20-footers. When she sees those going in it is always good for her confidence. She hit fairways and greens and to shoot even par over 54 holes with a 79 thrown in there on Saturday, that is pretty impressive."
Lennarth made five birdies during her round including back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. The Stockholm, Sweden native finished in the top 11 in all four fall events for the Tide.
Freshman Jennifer Kirby equaled Lennarth's 69 (-3) and finished tied for 17th at 5-over-par 221. Kirby also sank five birdies on the day and shaved seven strokes off the pair of 76s she posted in each of the first two rounds.
Sophomore Brooke Pancake shot 77 (+5) for the third straight round for a 54-hole score of 231, good for a tie for 54th. Junior Courtney Harter carded an 80 (+8) to finish in 74th, and senior Rhea Nair shot 81 (+9) and wound up in 73rd.
Alabama will resume play in the spring at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic beginning Feb. 7.
