NEW ORLEANS - Senior Houssam Yassine and junior Trey Walston will play in the doubles quarterfinals of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Southern Regional Championship on Sunday. The Crimson Tide netters became one of four teams to advance to Sunday's play with a hard-fought 9-7 win over LSU sophomore Neal Skupski and freshman Stefan Szacinski.
"Houssam and Trey had a great day today," said assistant coach Bo Hodge. "They beat a very good LSU team and are starting to prove that they belong in our doubles lineup. I hope that will carry over in their match tomorrow."
Walston and Yassine will face off with Mississippi State sophomores Artem Ilyushin and George Coupland Sunday not before 10:30 a.m. (CST). The doubles finals will immediately follow the completion of the semifinals.
Also competing for Alabama on Saturday was the doubles team of sophomores Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson, who lost by a 9-8(3) decision to New Orleans junior Ben Smith and sophomore Calvin Kemp.
"Ricky and Michael fought hard but came up a little short," added Hodge. "They are improving with every match they play, and I expect them to continue to get better."
