TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team will kick off its dual match season Sunday when it hosts UT-Chattanooga at 1:00 p.m. (CST). Matches will take place at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
"We are looking forward to our first dual match of the season especially since it is at home," said assistant coach Rahim Esmail. "I think our tournament at Northwestern last week was great preparation for us heading into this weekend. We looked great in practice this week and will be ready to go Sunday against Chattanooga."
Alabama returns six letterwinners from last season and adds the talented freshmen duo of Taylor Lindsey and Courtney McLane. Sophomore Tiffany Welcher, the Crimson Tide's No. 1 singles player for the 2008 season, begins the spring at No. 72 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division I Women's Singles rankings.
Entering Sunday's contest, Chattanooga will have already played two dual matches on the season. The Lady Mocs opened with a 6-1 win over Belmont on Jan. 17 and are hosting UNC Asheville Saturday before traveling to Tuscaloosa.
Sunday's match between Alabama and Chattanooga marks the 11th meeting in history in the series that dates back to the 1977 season. The Lady Mocs currently own the 6-4 advantage. The Tide and Chattanooga last met on Feb. 16, 2007 where Alabam won 5-2 on its home courts.
