TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head women's cross country coach Randy Hasenbank led the Crimson Tide through their sixth week of practice and the 36th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational. The squad is concentrating on strength work and endurance.
The Crimson Tide placed fourth at the meet being led by freshmen Sara Vaughn and Kelsey Johnson who placed 1st and 4th, respectively.
Vaughn was named both the SEC Athlete of the Week and the Freshman of the Week by the Southeastern Conference this week for her effort at the Crimson Classic.
Alabama has moved up from No. 5 to No. 4 in the South Region rankings this week. The team is starting to look like a solid contender in the region.
"The big difference this season is attitude," Hasenbank said. "The attitude of the squad is very, very positive. The ladies are coachable, goal oriented and driven, they like practice."
The Tide gets a well deserved two week break after having two meets in the past two weeks. They will toe line in Fayetteville, Ark. in two weeks. The race will serve as the first 6,000 meter race for most of the squad.
"Of course the schedule gets tougher from here" Hasenbank said. "We not only move from 5k to 6k but we also enter the championship portion of our season. We will spend the next couple of weeks preparing for the Chili Pepper meet in Fayetteville."
The Crimson Tide will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 18 to compete at the Chile Pepper Invitational. The 6k race will be held at the University of Arkansas cross country course at 10:30 a.m.
