FLUSHING, N.Y. - Men's tennis freshman John Lewis won the singles III flight finals Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center Men's College Invitational. Lewis beat Penn's Adam Schwartz in three sets 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.
"We had another positive weekend and had the opportunity to play some good matches against solid competition," said head coach Billy Pate. "I'm proud of John for doing so well in his first tournament. He will only get better, so it bodes well as he continues to work hard and progress during the year."
Over the course of the three-day event, Lewis beat four competitors from four different Ivy League institutions. On the opening day, he advanced past Brown's Sam Garland 7-6(5), 6-1 in the round of 16 and Connor Dawson of Yale 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
