TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's cross country team hosted the 20th Annual Crimson Classic this morning at the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course. Alabama came away with the championship despite not having two of their top runners competing.
"It was a great performance by a lot of our young runners," head coach Randy Hasenbank said. "They were able to see they can run nice times on a rolling course which is tougher than most people think."
The Crimson Tide was led once again by freshman Sara Vaughn who won the race covering 5,000 meters in a personal best 17:17.95. She was followed by Kelsey Johnson who placed third (17:35.90).
All five scoring runners for Alabama finished in the top 15 with Andrea Torske finishing ninth (18:27.56), Sarah Gilmore in 11th (18:41.27), and Leigh Gilmore in 14th (18:41.27). Other finishers for the Tide were Megan Williams in 23rd (19:16.88) and Rue Chitwood in 32nd (19:48.36).
"I really liked running in front of the home crowd," Vaughn said. "It was great to put out a tough effort on tough course today."
In team scoring, Alabama won with 38 points followed by Georgia State (44). Samford was third (48), Jacksonville State finished fourth (145) and Birmingham Southern finished out the top five (171). Full results can be found on cfpitiming.com.
The women will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 20.
