FLUSHING, N.Y. - Men's tennis freshman John Lewis edged Harvard's Michael Hayes 6-1, 7-6 on Saturday to advance to the finals of the singles III flight at the USTA National Tennis Center Men's College Invitational. Lewis will play Penn's Adam Schwartz Sunday in the finals.
"I'm very happy to see John experience success in his first college event," said head coach Billy Pate. "He's playing well and is gaining more confidence each match. As he gets more matches under his belt, he'll be even stronger."
Earlier in the day, Lewis paired up with Michael Jung in the doubles I flight where the duo lost a close 8-6 decision to Cornell's Kyle Doppelt and Joshua Goldstein. Jung also competed in singles today where he met up with Penn's Hicham Laalej. Laalej took the match 6-1, 7-5. After sitting out his second match yesterday, No. 106 Billy Mertz returned to the court, but fell to Jonathan Jaklitsch of Cornell 6-3, 6-3.
Jung, Lewis and Mertz will each play his final match at the Invitational Sunday morning with all three matches scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. (CST).
