BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama sophomore forward Victoria Frederick was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office today. On the heels of the first weekend of soccer for the Crimson Tide Frederick garners the honor for the first time in her career.
"We are always pleased when we have a member of our program that gets recognized," head coach Todd Bramble said. "She has worked hard for the honor and I am happy she got recognized. It was a collective team effort and I am sure she would be the first one to tell you that."
Frederick has been a force up front for the Crimson Tide as the Huntsville, Ala. native has amassed six points on two goals and two assists in two matches. Alabama has scored four goals this season and the sophomore has had her hand in each one of them.
Frederick got on the stat sheet early by opening the Crimson Tide season with a goal in the 16th minute. The goal proved to help Alabama earn a tie against the reigning conference USA champion Memphis on the road.
In the home opener the fleet-footed forward was even quicker to find the net this time scoring in the fourth minute. The goal ended up the game winner as Alabama earned a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville State. Frederick also handed out two assists in the contest, helping the Crimson Tide to a goal late in the first half and again in the second frame.
"It was great to come out and start the season with a win in front of our home crowd," Frederick said. "My teammates did a great job of moving the ball in the attacking third and create chances for us to finish."
The 2007 leading scorer for Alabama becomes the first Crimson Tide offensive player to earn a weekly honor since Libby Probst was named the Soccer America Player of the Week in 2005. Last season Justine Bernier was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Crimson Tide will head to the Los Angeles area to play two matches. UA will open the trip on Friday, Sept. 5 against Cal State Fullerton at 9:30 p.m. CST and then play the reigning national champion in USC on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 3:00 p.m. CST.
