TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Rolltide.com and the Alabama women's cross country team have started a new weekly segment called Seven Questions. Select players and coaches will check in weekly on Rolltide.com and answer questions pertaining to things on and off the field. The third edition features freshman Sara Vaughn.
Rolltide.com: When and why did you start running?
Sara Vaughn: My dad has always been a runner and he really got me involved in the sport. I started running with him to stay in shape for soccer when I was about 10 years old but I ended up loving to run. My dad would take me to races and run beside me and we always had a great time together.
Rolltide.com: What are your personal goals and what are the team goals for this year and career?
Vaughn: My personal goal is to improve on my times from high school, get stronger and have fun. As a team, we would like everyone to stay healthy and fit and we would like to improve and build upon what was accomplished last year.
Rolltide.com: Do you have a pre-race ritual?
Vaughn: Usually I listen to upbeat songs on my iPod to relax and most often I visualize the race in my head.
Rolltide.com: What's your favorite race and why?
Vaughn: I like any race with a challenging course. I think a runner can really prove her strength and ability if the course is difficult.
Rolltide.com: You're from Oklahoma, why come all the way to Alabama?
Vaughn: I really liked the campus and atmosphere here. I also felt a strong bond with the girls on the team and the coaches, as well.
Rolltide.com: How did it feel to be the front runner for the Tide in your first collegiate race and then nearly win?
Vaughn: It felt great! I was really happy with my first race. I think the rest of the girls did amazing too. I still can't believe that I've already raced in my first college race, it's still kind of unreal!
Rolltide.com: Other than running, what Olympic sport would you want to compete in and why?
Vaughn: I have always loved watching the divers in the Olympics. I think it would be really fun to do flips and twists from a high board into the water with no splash!
