
Golfers Shoot 5-Under to Finish 6th at Carpet Capital

ROCKY FACE, GA. - Saving its best for last, the University of Alabama men's golf team shot 5-under par in Sunday's third and final round to jump eight spots and finish sixth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. The tournament, held at the par 72 The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., began on Friday and continued through Sunday.
Alabama finished the tournament 11-over par, posting round scores of 295-297-283/875. Chattanooga held on to the team lead for a second straight day to claim the championship, winning at even par and besting the field of 18 teams with its round scores of 291-283-290/864. Tennessee finished five shots back for second (869), followed by South Carolina (870), Clemson (872), Florida (873) Alabama (875), Georgia (876), tied at eighth Texas Tech and Ole Miss (877), Wake Forest (879), Georgia Tech (880), tied at 12th first round leader East Tennessee State and Auburn (883), Central Florida (889), tied at 15th Mississippi State, UAB and Georgia State (890), and at 18th North Carolina (900).
Clemson's Kyle Stanley was the medalist, finishing 8-under par (73-66-69/208) and five shots ahead of a pair of golfers, Chattanooga's Jonathan Hodge and South Carolina's Allen Koon, who finished tied one another at 2nd at 3-under par.
Matthew Swan opened his senior season at Alabama with a top 10 individual finish. The Montgomery native shot Alabama's low round of the tournament, 68, on Sunday. His scores were 76-72-68/216 to finish T-10th at even par. True freshman Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, Fla., had Alabama's next-best finish. Cauley made his collegiate debut with a T-20th tournament finish, shooting 72-74-72/218 to finish 2-over par. Senior Matt Hughes of Dalton, Ga., shot 71-75-76/222 to finish 6-over and T-40th. Redshirt freshman Phillip Weaver of Tuscaloosa shot 76-76-71/223 and finished T-47th at 7-over par. And redshirt freshman Hunter Hamrick shot 76-76-72/224 to finish T-49th at 8-over par.
Next for Alabama is the Ping/Golfweek Preview that begins on September 28. That tournament will be held at Inverness Club near Toledo, Ohio, and will be the course and site of the 2008-09 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in May.
