TUSCALOOSA - Two of Alabama's greatest golf teams will square against one another next month. Alabama's 1979 Southeastern Conference champions team will battle against the Crimson Tide's 2008 SEC Champions team in an exhibition match. They'll meet on Friday, October 3 at Tuscaloosa's Ol' Colony Club, the Crimson Tide's home course.
"We're going to have the '79 team play the 2008 team plus the freshman team," said Alabama coach Jay Seawell. "It will be an exhibition. Gary Trivisonno is the only one from the 1979 team who cannot get back. We've plugged in the team captain, Dr. Allen Yielding, who had exhausted his eligibility but was finishing up that year. Dr. Yielding will take Gary's place. So those five guys, Cecil Ingram, Kevin Canada, Steve Hudson, Barry Harwell and Dr. Yielding will play Michael Thompson, Mark Harrell, Matthew Swan, Joseph Sykora and Matt Hughes. Tab Hudson is going to be honorary captain for the 1979 team. He's going to wear a straw hat and be there in honor of (the late) Conrad Rehling who coached the 1979 team. It should be neat."
The two teams will play 18 holes. The 1979 team will use the members' tees and the 2008 team will play the back tees.
The 2008 Tide team will officially receive their SEC Championship rings that weekend and will be honored on the field at the October 4 Alabama vs. Kentucky football game. The SEC tournament was one of a record six team tournament championships Alabama won last season.
