TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama Rowing team, in its second year as a varsity program, continues to improve by leaps and bounds, not only on the water, but in the classroom as evidenced by the fact that nine Crimson Tide rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete award this season.
"Our goal, from the very beginning, has to been to excel in all areas, and I think having nine of our ladies earn this award shows that our roster is made up of dedicated students who work as hard in the classroom as they do on the river," Alabama head coach Larry Davis said.
Seniors Sarah Beaver, McKenna Frease, Leigh Ann Lazarus and Margaret Strojny, juniors Katie Tippey and Stacey Ogle along with sophomores Courtney Crumby, Bailey Sanders and Katie Spohr all earned the honor, which requires a rower hold a 3.5 grade point average for her career, be at least a sophomore in eligibility, and have competed in 75-percent of the team's spring races.
Four members of the Crimson Tide's crew - Ogle, Sanders, Tippey - sport perfect 4.0 GPAs for their career. The Tide's 4.0 total trailed only Tulsa which had five.
Last year, seven members of the Tide team earned the academic honor bestowed by the CRCA. Among the nine named this year, five - Beaver, Frease, Lazarus, Strojny and Tippey - earned the honor for the second time.
