TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - More than a dozen members of the Alabama Rowing team were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll it was announced by the conference office this week.
"We are a program that is constantly growing and moving forward," head coach Larry Davis said. "And I think this is a good indication of that fact. Last year we had nine student-athletes earn this honor and this year we had 16."
A total of 16 Crimson Tide rowers made this list this year, the program's second in NCAA competition. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing and carry a 3.0 or better grade point average for the previous academic year or their career.
"I'm very proud that we have earned this honor, not just in terms of how many, but also in terms of depth," Davis said. "More than half of those on the varsity were named to the list this year. Our primary objective is for our student-athletes to receive outstanding educations. Balancing academics and athletics at this level is not an easy task and I'm very pleased that our ladies continue to excel in both areas."
Seniors Jessica Autrey, Sarah Beaver, Bryn Crawford, McKenna Frease, Leigh Ann Lazarus and Margaret Strojny; juniors Victoria Croy, Rachel Justiss, Courtney Lewallen, Stacey Ogle and Katie Tippey along with sophomores Courtney Crumby, Tacoma Morrissey, Bailey Sanders, Katie Spohr and Cathryn Whitlock all made the list for the 2007-08 season.
Nine Alabama rowers earned the honor last year, including Crawford, Croy, Frease, Lazarus and Strojny all earned the award for the second time this season.
