AUBURN, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Auburn Saturday at the Luther Young Tennis Complex in Auburn. With the loss the Tide falls to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the SEC.
Alabama's Alice Tunaru picked up the only Tide victory of the day over Auburn's Melissa Koning on court three. Tunaru outlasted Koning in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, to put Alabama on the board.
"Alice had a breakthrough match today," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "She has worked really hard and been close all season and I was glad to see that pay off for her today."
In doubles, the Tide fell on all three courts to give the Tigers the advantage heading into singles play. Alabama's top tandem of Andrea Brenes and Paulina Bigos fell to Alex Haney and Koning, 8-5, while Meritt Emery and Tiffany Welcher lost to Auburn's Whitney Chappell and Fani Chifchieva, 8-6.
On court three Alabama's Shelley Godwin and Bianca Svensson lost an 8-6 decision to Gaby Beelen and Jill Hastenrath.
"Auburn is a solid team and we couldn't afford to bail out on the big points," said Mainz. "We have to be more committed and willing to do the work. We made errors at critical times and in the end we failed to make good decisions."
Alabama returns to action at the SEC Championships April 17-20 at Auburn.
