ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Alabama women's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision at ninth-ranked Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. With the loss, the Tide falls to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the SEC.

"I thought Georgia took command of the match early today," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We didn't take advantage of the early opportunities so we were never able to really get into the match. I thought Georgia played a solid match and they were more disciplined than we were. When you are playing a good team like Georgia you have to challenge them early and we didn't do that."

Alabama fell on all three doubles courts to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition. The top Tide tandem of Andrea Brenes and Alice Tunaru fell to the 25th-ranked pair of Kelley and Yvette Hyndman before Shelley Godwin and Bianca Svensson fell to Monica Dancevic and Adrienne Elsberry at No. 3.

In singles, the Tide lost matches at the two, five and three positions as Georgia clinched the match.

Georgia picked up another win on court four before Alabama's Tiffany Welcher upset 56th-ranked Kelley Hyndman at No. 1 singles to give the Tide its only point of the match. The freshman from Clarksville, Ind., took a 6-3, 7-6(1), victory.

"Tiffany did a great job at number one," said Mainz. "She played a solid match and did a nice job of finishing and closing the match in two sets. That is a good win for her and I am proud of her and she needs to build on that for Sunday (vs. Tennessee) and the rest of the season. We played a solid top 10 team today and we have a lot to play for on Sunday."

Alabama returns to action Sunday, March 30, against Tennessee at the UT Varsity Courts in Knoxville, Tenn. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (ET) start.
